The Apocalypse
took Kamilari by surprise on the afternoon of April 1at in 2026, when the Storm “Erminio” whipped up massive amounts of desert dust in the Sahara, sweeping it from Libya and Chad across the eastern Mediterraneanand the Island of Crete in a gigantic cloud of dust. The yellowish clouds, composed of eroded rock of the Tibesti mountain range, including silicates, feldspars, iron oxides as well as clay and limestone minerals, reached a particle density with peak values of over 1000 micrograms of PM10 per cubic meter of air around 4pm, which, especially in the province of Heraklion, turned the sky into a glowing orange, briefly even into a deep red and bathed the entire landscape in a dark, pale light as we otherwise know only from photos of the Martian surface.
For a few hours one could even see some of the night’s stars in the orange-red sky. The thick layer of dust in the air acted like a giant filter completely absorbing the short wavelength blue light while allowing the long wavelength light to pass though and reach our eyes.
Even older villagers reported an almost unprecedented phenomenon, one that many had never seen in such an extreme form before.
