The column, a symbol and epitome of Greek antiquity, is one of the most striking elements of archaic and classical Greek architecture. The slender and usually carefully proportioned and fluted Doric columns of Olympia (776 BC – 393 AD) are impressive relics and silent witnesses to the once paramount importance of this cult site as one of the most important religious and athletic centers of antiquity. They still fascinate today with their elegant beauty, rhythm, and the play of shadows, which, despite their mass, give them an almost delicate lightness.
